Destination Decisions

In my first post – The End is Near – I made the decision to travel when my AmeriCorps VISTA term ends on March 1. Since then I’ve been thinking a lot about where I’d like to go, and about the places that I want to see more than any others. The list I originally came up with looked something like this:

  1. Inca Trail to Machu Picchu – Peru
  2. The Great Wall of China
  3. Angkor Wat, Siem Reap & Ta Prohm – Cambodia
  4. The Great Pyramids – Egypt
  5. Petra – Jordan
  6. The Taj Mahal – Agra India
  7. Thailand
  8. Scotland

From here I narrowed down the list based on costs of travel/accommodation, entry requirements, and tourist seasons. Since hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is #1 on my list I started there. Sadly due to my last-minute decision to travel, the regulations on the amount of people allowed on the trail, and the expected cost of my dream trip, I will not be visiting Peru or Machu Picchu this time around. So with my spirit a little crushed at my sad realization I started re-evaluating my list to see how I could get the best experience out of a trip based on the remaining 7 locations. I did a lot of searching…. A LOT and think I came up with the perfect solution.

Southeast Asia

The plan is to travel to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and Indonesia with the hope that I can continue (depending on funds) on to Sri Lanka, Malaysia, India, and China. So now that I finally have a destination all I have to do is tell my parents, buy a backpack, sell all my stuff, buy a few plane tickets, get immunized, buy travel insurance, and pay/cancel all bills etc. etc. etc….

*If you have a suggestion or advice about my trip I would love and appreciate your help*
